West Bengal: state in the eastern region

West Bengal is a state in the eastern region along the Bay of Bengal. With an overall population of 91 million, it ranks as the 4th most populous state and 14th largest state in the country. Moreover, it ranks as the 17th most populous subdivision of the whole world. Nature and the places to visit in West Bengal have made the state well-popular among tourists. Its state capital Kolkata is the third-largest metropolis and seventh-largest city, in the context of population, in India. Its demographic majority is covered by Bengali Hindus and the ethnic group Bengalis.

Interesting facts

It is the kind of state that owes many names for its capital. Calcutta is being named as the city of joy, the city of the procession, the city of palaces, and the cultural capital of India. It has majestic Howrah station that is the busiest of all and one of the biggest station complexes. Till 2006, there existed no such railway station by the name of Kolkata or Calcutta. There existed only Howrah and Sealdah stations. The state also owes the busiest and the world’s largest Cantilever Bridge that is only one in the whole country- India

Trending social issue

West Bengal has mostly followed three basic trends and that be in the field of politics.

· The politicization of administration,

· Criminalization of politics and,

· Institutionalizing corruption

The development can be seen under the governance of the Trinamool congress made by Mamata Banerjee ruling the state for the last 10years. However, the rank of the state has been sliding on various fronts including categories is like:

· Per capita income

· GDP

· Industrial production

The state ranks as the 6th largest economy in India. For meeting its demand of food and economic criteria west Bengal is still dependent on the central government and remained stagnant in terms of food production. Its dependence on medium-sized industries has significantly highlighted its services and heavy industries to participate in the overall development of the country.

The main problem and social issues of that state

After 2005, the state has experienced faster poverty reduction. However, it has been measured as a slow process if we consider the things specifically. To rectify the issue of unemployment the state has also created new jobs in the non-farming sectors. But the jobs are like the casual ones while the female labor participation remains to be slow. Overall inequality has considerably increased and remains the slow-developing state among all the states of the country. Though many steps have also been taken to remove the gender inequalities the rate of closing the gender gaps has been noted as the mix of all the states. The secondary school completion rate has become lower and the child sex ratio is one of the declining ones in comparison to other states. The state includes the social groups that are different and are highlighted of all the tribal population. And this has been a major social issue for the whole country. If on one hand, maternal mortality in the state is declining then on the other hand only a fifth of West Bengal’s women have completed secondary school. And in contrast to urban areas, both men and women are having similar types of jobs.
